How does one define faith in the context of learning? Rabindranath Tagore (1955) wrote: “Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings when the dawn is still dark.” Faith is the ability to process one’s intuitive intelligence—it is a knack for figuring things out even when there is inadequate data support. The leader who can perceive the emerging patterns of organizational reality much ahead of his colleagues is acting on faith. His learning is not based on his intellect alone—he learns from his gut feelings and the gentle stirrings of his own heart.

Faith is an integrated approach to learning. If one cultivates faith, one learns with both head and heart. Although learning with the head is preferred in our modern educational and organizational systems, the old dictum of learning by heart is of great importance. We see that events that we remember the most from our childhood are the ones that have strong emotions attached to them. We pay attention to our work if our heart is involved in it. Leaders who enable the employees of their organizations to lend their hearts to their jobs promote faith in work. Bill George, chief executive officer of Medtronic, Inc., a multinational biomedical company said the following:

After all, we spend more time at work than in any other part of our lives. Shouldn’t we find significance in our work and the opportunity to use our mind and feeling while appealing to the animating or life giving principles within us? This isn’t practicing religion per se but rather devoting our whole being toward a higher purpose in our work.
